Reflection of our trip to Haiti

Hot humid air
Lush, dense, green landscape in the mountains. cactus-made gates, palm trees, mango trees, dewey leaves
Dry, brush landscape toward the coast. emaciated animals, salty fishy air, white sand & sea urchins
the thick smell of burning coal
piles on piles on piles of items being sold under makeshift roofs and umbrellas
crumbled buildings, rubble
smoky grey swirls in the air from burning trash
winding, r o c k y, muddy roads that felt like being on a roller coaster
the laughter of the school children, waves and friendly smiles from locals
colorful hair bows, patterned uniforms.
empty classrooms. dust. brown chalkboards. concrete slit windows.
dry. no clean water, no food. no sustainability.
the sunlight as it hit the tips of the palm trees in the morning, & the glittering starry night sky with endless shooting stars
STORIES. earthquake stories, family stories, work experiences, dreams & ambitions
goats, hundreds of them
c o m m u n i t y. helping us push our van out of the mud, tending to my wounded foot on the beach.
a small child holding a kite made from a plastic bag, running along mounds of waste, smiling, innocent.
determination.
skillful hands sewing embroidered gowns. music from an old radio.
chaos
    serenity
         needs
              hopes
                   courage
                           gratitude
                                 strength.

Leaving for Haiti..

Students for Haiti has changed my life in more ways than one. Our organization's collective accomplishments through fundraising efforts, growing our family of members and spreading awareness, & completion of our goal to rebuild Villa clinic opened my eyes to the realm of possibility and understanding that individually and together, we can make great change. It has allowed me to be a part of something so incredible and to work with others who share an overwhelming passion. Through creating Bay Lavi, my experience in college has been illuminated, impacted, and my overall path in life diverted.

In two days, 8 of us on the Executive Board are traveling down to Haiti including Dan Reyes, Victoria Winslow, Alli Serencko, William O'Reagan, Alyssa Detruex, Matthias Fallis, Jacob Joseph & myself. We're going to be meeting with the St. Boniface Foundation & spending time in Fond des Blanc, Mouillage Fouquet, as well as visiting schools in the community.

After a year and half of working ardently to fundraise and spread awareness of our mission and conditions in Haiti, I'm greatly anticipating our trip down. Visiting the various sites and meeting with people in the Haitian community will grant all of us a better understanding of how we can help and what needs to be accomplished. It's going to be a rewarding experience that will re-ignite our motivation.
Gaining new insight and inspiration will help me re-vamp the Bay Lavi product line, perhaps having Haitian people help with the new designs! :)

Photos from the Girls Night Out Event!

Here are a few photos from our trunk show at the Girls Night Out event last friday. The event was really successful & we had an absolute blast hosting our table there! My best friends Nelly and Elizabeth helped me to prepare for the event and work the table. Liz and Alyssa from Students for Haiti also helped out & were in charge of promoting and selling Bay Lavi bracelets and spreading the word about our organization's work down in Haiti.
Tons of jewelry & Bay Lavi wrap bracelets were sold and loads of hershey kisses were passed out :) It really meant the world to me to see my friends come and support eff.Y.bee at the event as well. Overall it was a great time and I plan to do another event before the end of Spring!
